Tayside & Fife Secondary Schools
Tayside & Fife Secondary Schools followed last year's unprecedented success in the 2010 basketballscotland Scottish Schools Cup with another 9 of our school teams reaching 8 finals, including one all Tayside & Fife affair in the S1 Girls Cup.
Secondary Schools basketball was a key focus for a lot of Tayside & Fife schools and a record number of boys and girls teams entered the basketballscotland Scottish Schools Cups, with first round losers going into the consolation "Plate" competition. The S1 competition enjoyed more games this year as a regional format was adopted for the earlier rounds.
There are four age groups; S1, U14, U15 and Open (S4-S6) for Boys and Girls meaning there are 16 categories, and therefore 16 Finals, across the Cup and Plate competitions. For Tayside & Fife schools to have 9 finalists in 8 competitions is a fantastic achievement.
Arbroath HS (Angus) and Grove Academy (Dundee) in particular deserve a special mention as they reached four and two Cup finals respectively, with Forfar Academy reaching two Plate finals. It is no co-incidence that these schools have a strong basketball programme at their secondary school but also a very good Primary School development programme in their respective Cluster's, ensuring that their future secondary school pupils have some excellent basketball fundamentals when they go into First Year.
This year the finals were hosted at Edinburgh University's Pleasance Sports Centre, with some excellent and exciting basketball displayed over the finals week. Highlight of the week was Abrbroath HS's Nicky Sim hitting a three point last second buzzer beater against Portobello HS in the U15 Boys' Cup Final, a game which they went on to win in overtime.
Scottish Cup winners and congratulations to players, teachers and the following schools:
U15 Boys - Arbroath High School beat Portobello High School
U15 Girls - Arbroath High School beat Boroughmuir High School
S1 Boys - Grove Academy beat Millburn Academy
S1 Girls - Grove Academy beat Arbroath High School
Commiserations, but well done on getting to the final, goes to:
S1 Girls Cup - Arbroath High School runners up to Grove Academy
U14 Girls Cup - Arbroath High School runners up to St Maurice's HS
S1 Girls Plate - Forfar Academy runners up to Mary Erskine School
U14 Girls Plate - Forfar Academy runners up to Portobello High School
U15 Girls Plate - Perth Grammar School runners up to St Andrews Secondary School
There were numerous other Tayside & Fife Schools who put up a tremendous show but lost out at either semi final or quarter final stage such as Woodmill HS, Monifieth HS, Kinross HS and Queen Anne HS and all Tayside & Fife secondary schools are to be commended for the basketball opportunities they provide for their pupils.
